Third graders in in Gwinnett County, Ga., were given math homework Wednesday that asked questions about slavery and beatings.

Christopher Braxton told ABC News affiliate WSB-TV in Atlanta that he couldn't believe the assignment his 8-year-old son brought home from of Beaver Ridge Elementary school in Norcross.

"It kind of blew me away," Braxton said. "Do you see what I see? Do you really see what I see? He's not answering this question."

The question read, "Each tree had 56 oranges. If eight slaves pick them equally, then how much would each slave pick?"

Another math problem read, "If Frederick got two beatings per day, how many beatings did he get in one week?"

Another question asked how many baskets of cotton Frederick filled.

"I was furious at that point," Braxton said.

"This outrages me because it just lets me know that there's still racists," said Stephanie Jones, whose child is a student at the school.

"Something like that shouldn't be imbedded into a kid of the third, fourth, fifth, any grade," parent Terrance Barnett told WSB-TV. "I'm having to explain to my 8-year-old why slavery or slaves or beatings are in a math problem. That hurts."

"In this one, the teachers were trying to do a cross-curricular activity," Gwinnett County school district spokeswoman Sloan Roach said.

Roach said the teachers were attempting to incorporate social studies into math problems.

"We understand that there are concerns about these questions, and we agree that these questions were not appropriate," she said.

My Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword review (spoiler-free, almost)

Ok it's like 1am but I don't feel like going to sleep so here we go. Also I'm going to make this as spoiler-free as possible, but there may be some items or something spoiled. You have been warned.

As soon as the special edition bundle was available on Amazon, I ordered it. Because I ordered it online, I understood that I wouldn't get the game on release day (duh). So I spent the extra ten bucks on one day shipping so I'd get it on Tuesday (game came out Sunday, doesn't ship until Monday of course). But of course the stupid UPS man doesn't show up till 8:30pm that Tuesday night and my friend was turning 21 so I only had like 30 minutes to play it =/ Barely enough to get into it. But I digress.

Anyway so the key feature of this game are the controls. And everyone's wondering how they work. Well, it's amazing. Now of course the motion controls aren't perfect (some sword swings are recorded incorrectly), but when it does work... wow. It's such an awesome experience and I don't think I'd play a 3d Zelda normally now. It's so much fun just to stand randomly anywhere and just swing the sword. The items also make good use with the motion controls; one of the new items (the Beetle) is so much fun to fly around.

The graphics, while not HD-amazing because well, it's the Wii, are actually really good. Of course it's a bit dated, so I guess a more accurate explanation is that the art style is amazing. It's a very colorful game. And the backgrounds for some areas look like a waterpainting, it's really nice. It works for the game. I will say though I did like the darker theme of Twilight Princess though.

Now, there was one thing where the art style didn't really impress me -- it doesn't have to really do with the art style itself, but more of the context of it. The surface land was always touted in the advertising as the "dangerous lands below" or something to that effect. But because the art style is so colorful, it's too cheery to really give the impression that the surface land was really that dangerous. Again, it's not a detraction of the art style, but more that it wasn't appropriate to display the danger for the surface land.

The story is definitely interesting. Personally, I think Nintendo may have half-assed some of the more important elements of the story, but it does explain the origins of several important key points in the Zelda franchise. It was interesting but again, I still think that Twilight Princess' story was more engaging; past the first several dungeons, I never really felt an urgency to save Zelda as I did with stopping the Twilight or Zant. Around the end of the game there are several "filler" portions that get annoying but aren't that deal breaking.

Next up... the dungeons. As usual, it's the normal solve puzzles, beat boss scenario. But what I like is how Nintendo managed to use the same formula but never really make the game too stale. It's definitely familiar but I don't really ever find that a bad thing if it's pulled off correctly. Some of the boss battles here do have that 'epic' feel that Twilight Princess had. The recurring villain, Ghirahim, I also liked. The boss battles with him were fun and difficult.

Nintendo also chose to do something slightly different with the overworld. Now I know technically Skyloft + the land below is the overworld, but personally I like having a single roaming overworld where you can access everything from the main field, like in Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, or Twilight Princess. The three main areas where the dungeons are located are all separated on the surface land and only accessible with loftwings (i.e. to go from dungeon 1 to dungeon 3, you have to fly up into the sky from dungeon 1 then fly to dungeon 3). It's really a minor annoyance -- it didn't detract from the game for me because I knew they were going for something different.

The sidequests. Yeah, not much to say here. I think I did like one sidequest. I wasn't interested in it, I just wanted to see what happened in the damn story

Overall, this was a really fun game. The controls were awesome, sometimes a little frustrating when the swing isn't recorded accurately, but it made the game a lot more engaging. It also makes the game a bit more difficult than other games. Personally Twilight Princess still ranks as my favorite (Zelda) game of all time, because of its graphic, story, and controls were amazing, but Skyward Sword is still one of the best Zeldas out there.

If I had to rank the Zeldas... here's my list:

I have played Oracle of Ages, Link's Awakening, The Adventure of Link, and Four Swords Adventures, but never finished them so I'm not going to rank them.

Today Nintendo released the Hyrule Historia, which supposedly has the timeline of all of the Zelda games. Ok it may not seem to be that big of a deal but early on in the series people have been wondering how the games fit and tie in with each other. There's been some rough translations of the book so far and here is what the translations are saying -- I'm waiting for more accurate ones to see if this one is actually legit.

Try not to spoil a lot of things yet, I'm still only a couple hours into the game. Like 3 or 4. Still wandering around and getting a feel for the game. It's a lot of fun, I like the sense of exploration and the fact that it really does feel like a whole new world. The combat seems a bit... dated though. Hopefully it will get better later in the game.

Couple questions (this is my first real TES game, I played Morrowind but did nothing but cheat and kill people):
I was wandering around and a bandit toll guard stopped me and told me to pay the fine. I just killed the toll guard. Are there any long-term consequences of this? Obviously killing the guards in the cities is bad, but this was in the middle of no where and I think that guard was the only person around.

Also, other than finding random caverns with bandits or bears in them, where can I train to level up my combat skills?

New low in my social life

I'm far from the most social of people. Takes great effort for me to contact my mom and siblings every now and then to let them know I'm still alive and well. I connect far better with books and long-dead authors than most any living humans. For the most part my perspective on social interaction is that if i can escape without eternally shaming myself and my ancestors then it's merited a great success.

So girls are a difficult quandry.

My main practice traditionally was to maintain simplicity by ignoring them, or if they were persistent enough in pestering, do the minimal response necessary for politeness. I do eventually want to get married and have a family though, so i've taken some steps to get at least a working knowledge and some practice in dealing with them.

The current girl i'm interested in, been interacting with her a fair deal over the past two months, knows i'm interested in her, and seemed receptive, but said she didn't think she was prepared for a relationship, nothing personal about me or anything.

And posted on facebook, lamenting how all her friends were getting engaged, married, kids, and she had no guy she could relate to, talk to, trust, or date.

I'd happily be any and all of those...

Blah. Emotions are annoying.

For the past couple year (I think it's been about that long), Zelda Reorchestrated has been working on a special project. This project was classified under the name of Project Maranello until last summer where it was announced that the project was really a high quality reorchestration of the most important tracks of Twilight Princess. Recently they raised over $20k in order to be able to record a professional choir in a recording studio engineered by John Kurlander. They will be recording through April I think, and wish to have a release over summer.

С возрастом происходят и другие нежелательные изменения: шкура теряет влагу, замедляется выработка коллагена и эластина - основных белков дермы, соответственно, нарушается структура коллагеновых и эластиновых волокон. Шкура теряет дарование эффективно защищаться через негативного воздействия окружающей среды; уменьшается ее упругость, эластичность, появляются морщины.

Zantherus upgraded to IPB 3.2.3!

As you can see, Zantherus looks extra snazzy today. That's because we've upgraded to the latest version of IPB. It could have been done awhile ago but I thought our subscription for updates had ran out. Well, it didn't. So here we are!

Also I'm working on getting back the Thoreau and Thoreau Dark skin but because it was a major version upgrade (we went from 3.1.4 to 3.2.3) I don't know if it's possible without re-buying the theme -- so we'll see. Thoreau and Thoreau Dark skins are now up.

Using a new service called Ifttt, I set up a service that automatically posts a tweet to WhyDontYouSayIt on twitter anytime an email is sent to randomtweetsarecool@gmail.com, with the subject Tweet.

Basically, the idea here was to create a twitter account that anyone can post to, in case they have something they want to get off of their minds anonymously. It's a totally automated process, so it could get pretty interesting. Try it out:

-Send email to randomtweetsarecool@gmail.com
-Make sure to put Tweet as the subject
-Wait 5-15 minutes
-Your message is automatically posted to WhyDontYouSayIt

A couple days ago I made this post, where I talked about something I set up using a service called Ifttt. I'm going to explain what that is, because it's seriously one of the coolest and best ideas I've heard of recently.

The principle of the idea is that all of your online services could easily be working together to make your life easier. The basis for these interactions relies on the formula "If this, then that." This basically means that you can set up one service to watch another, and if a certain trigger is fired, to do a certain action.

Ifttt allows you to make a bunch of popular services like facebook, twitter, youtube, craigslist, dropbox, google talk, rss feeds, google calendar, yahoo weather, and a bunch more, work together seamlessly.

For instance, here's some of the combinations that I have found awesome with ifttt:

-If I upload a new photo to Flickr, then download that photo to my dropbox.

-If I send a text tagged #tweet to ifttt, then post that text message to my twitter account.

-If I update my Google+ account with a public post, then post that to to my twitter.

-If I call ifttt and leave a voicemail, then email me a downloadable mp3 of the message I left, as well as a transcription of what I said.

-If a new movie is coming out soon, then post it's release date to my google calendar

-If it's going to rain tomorrow, then send me a text message.

-If an RSS feed I follow posts a new article, then save that article to my Instapaper.

These are just a few of the possibilities. There are literally thousands of possible combinations, meaning that you can automate some of the most common services on the internet. Best of all, you don't need any knowledge of APIs or coding. You just pair the services together, and tell them what to do. You should really, really check it out. I can't even believe how useful it has already been.
