scott pilgrim vs. the world only did well enough for 10th place at the box office this weekend... please, please go out and watch this movie. it's gotten great reviews across the board (81% at Rotten Tomatoes) but unfortunately no one is watching it, it makes me sad considering that this is probably one of my favorite movies of all time, do me a favor and watch it this weekend.

It strikes me as odd how people can be so open about discussing personal stuff on public walls and statuses.

Couple quick examples:

A couple our age at my church broke up. They both posted statuses mentioning that. Guys posted on the guy's, girls posted on the girl's. The girl's father actually posted a comment on her status, correcting a woman for somewhat insulting his daughter's ex-boyfriend. He did a diplomatic "They both decided it was best to move on. I love them both and respect the decision." thing. The idea of an older woman, who knows the families of both involved, gossiping in an open forum, where everyone in the church can see, is bewildering to me. Don't these people know that everyone can read this stuff?

And the guy did several posts to the effect of "Oh, God, if i ever love again, please give me someone who truly loves me."

And another girl from the church college group (who I happen to think is kind of cute...) has "liked" a bunch of things disparaging old exes. She had a boyfriend who went off to join the army, but she seems very nice, and it seem odd to openly "like" that type of stuff about an ex who's been away for a while, esp when everyone she's friends with at the church still knows the guy.

I can sort of understand gossip. I mean, one could argue that's what this is... But I find it interesting how people don't take any attempt to even obfuscate it. Private messages, or chat, or even privatize your wall, or something. Doing all this stuff on public walls where everyone can see just seem like a bizarre avenue.

According to Wikipedia, it's radius is 600-2600 solar radius, let's assume for funsies it's radius would be 2600. It's radius would be: 2600 * 6,955 * 10^8 = 1808300000000 KM. It's circumference would be roughly: 2PI * 1808300000000 = 11361874394000 KM. That's one big ass planet.

For the sake of debate, let's ignore obvious violations of physical law. Basically, the physical conditions on the planet would be the same as the earth: same gravity, same weather, magnetic field, land and ocean etc. There would be roughly 70% water, 30% land, same climates at roughly equal distribution as they are on earth. Years, days. minutes, etc last just as long. Basically, physical flaws should be left out of this conversation, it's just about what-if.

For starters, there could be civilizations completely unaware that there are other civilizations on the planet because of the vast distances. Federations of civilzations, civilizations warring each other, all equally oblivious of each other.

If you wanted to send a message over the internet from one side of the planet to the other it would take months. Assuming fiber optic cable being used and it sending data at the speed of light, it would take: (11361874394000 / 2) (half the circumference) / 300 000 (speed of light in km/s) = 18936457 seconds to transmit. Add 2% to that for routers and such in between, and that would be: 19315186 seconds. Or 321920 minutes. Or 5365 hours. Or 224 days.

I read a poll recently that 20% of Americans think Obama is secretly a Muslim.

My stepmother has been animatedly talking about random chain emails on the issue, and sent me an idiotic youtube video. Incidentally, none of these even attempt to offer evidence that he personally believes in Islam, which is a pre-requisite for being a member of a religion, but instead focus on vague connections or actions that are either too nebulous too address or are easily answered by reasonable explanations.

What do you think about this issue?

I wish they could "link" the accounts together so I can just log into one account and then access all of my other ones, but that's a security issue so I can see why they didn't add it.

A Muslim group called the "Cordoba Initiative" is intending to build a massive community center, with a mosque section included, two and half blocks away from the remnants of the World Trade Center towers in New York City. This complex has the stated intentions of providing a gathering place for Muslims, as a parallel to the Jewish Community Center in Manhattan, and as a means of cross-cultural dialogue through which to show the world that the radical terrorists do not truly represent Islam or the global Muslim community.

The "Ground Zero Mosque" issue has inflamed passions across the country. Newt Gingrich, Sarah Palin, and countless other conservative pundits have leapt to arms. The specific criticisms vary. It is a disgrace to have a mosque that close to the site of a crime committed by Muslim terrorists. Radical Muslims would see a mosque at this location as a symbol of conquest, proof that America is subjugated. Middle Eastern countries persecute Christianity, so reciprocal action is warranted. The imam presiding over the mosque is an anti-American "Islamist" (believes Islam should be the root of society and the state). Funding for the project comes from radical sources. The founders of the project are allies of terrorist groups. Etc, ad nauseum.

This is a small cross-section of a myriad of concerns, but together a cohesive picture is painted. Islam is a threat, Muslims are not to be trusted, and America must stand up against the looming threat. Unfortunately, these fears are in danger of creating a very real threat by the misguided attempt to combat a phantom menace.

As President Bush was so fond of proclaiming, America's fight is with terrorism, not Islam. Similarly, Islam's fight is with radicals, not America.

Turkey has spent its entire existence defending secularism from militant Islam. Indonesia combats numerous terrorist cells that try to intimidate its people. Pakistan faces an existential crisis in its war on the Taliban. Egypt desperately tries to suppress the Muslim Brotherhood. Lebanon is in a constant state of military and political conflict between Hezbollah and the rest of the country. The Palestinian Fatah government was militarily driven out of Gaza by Hamas and fears for its control of the West Bank. Secular dictators, often Pan-Arabists, like Nasser, Assad, and Hussein, saw the religious radicals as fundamental threats. Iranian protesters and even clerics try to martial forces against the theocratic regime. Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf States precariously attempt to delicately maintain an alliance with America and business relations with the West while not succumbing to an Islamist coup. Islam is in a civil war.

Millions of Americans are Muslim. Many of our soldiers fighting for our country are Muslim. Many of our allies are Muslim. They are an important part of our country and globe, and need to be dealt with in a reasonable and rational manner. The same standards should be applied to all.

America has long prided itself on freedom and openness. From the British, to the Axis, to the Soviets, to the Islamists now, we have presented ourselves as being a country where the Constitution protects the rights of all, separate from those other, lesser, oppressive nations. Since our rise to power we have made a habit of pushing other countries to be more like our political ideal. It is disingenuous, and dangerous in the continually occurring propaganda war, for us to populistically clamor against Islam as a first reaction. How can others believe our ideas if we don't practice themselves?

We need to support the moderate stream in their fight, not lump all Muslims indiscriminately together. To create the impression that Christians and Muslims are inherently different and irreconcilably in opposition is the same argument that the radical Islamists use as justification for their holy war. They want Christian leaders to tell the Muslim world that the West can't tolerate Islam, and they fervently oppose Muslim leaders like the Cordoba Initiative who insist that we can all get along.

In fact, the radical Islamists particularly hate the Sufi sect, which the leading imam on this project is part of. The Sufis are a mystical group that stress love over obedience, and independent reconciliation with God over institutionalized submission. Since the earliest days of Sufism, Sufis have opposed the powerful clerics and political movers of the Islamic world. Many Sufis have been accused of heresy, for their almost new-age-like repudiation of the Islamic law and acceptance of other beliefs. The Whirling Dervishes and other similar groups celebrate their love of God with music and dance, whereas the Taliban have openly declared that those are the work of Sheitan, the devil. Obviously there are variations in every sect, but the Sufis are on the whole Muslims who would fit many Christian or post-modern views of society.

The imam at the center of this issue, Feisal Abdul Rauf, has admittedly made some questionable comments on American foreign relations. He said that an integral step in American-Muslim relations was to acknowledge the damage caused by American intervention through propping up Middle Eastern dictatorships and such, and that the 9/11 attacks were in part provoked by American actions in the Middle East. However, those do have a degree of qualified merit, and are by no means extraordinary. Leftists and libertarians, even Republican Congressman Ron Paul, have said far more condemning remarks on that issue. Those statements are a poor excuse to abandon our American ideals.

Rauf also traveled twice to the Middle East in 2007 by request from the State Department and President Bush as an outreach to Muslims there. He is currently on another such mission for President Obama, where he is telling the people there that America is a free country where everyone can enjoy their freedoms. He is no radical anti-American. He is a useful advocate for our cause, if we don't drive him away.

Some have claimed that there are criminal or terrorist elements involved in the funding or association of groups related to the Cordoba Institute. If these claims have any merit, they are far better investigated by the criminal and intelligence agencies, rather than the fickle conspiracies of the mob. If there is wrongdoing, we have standard procedures for dealing with this, justly and objectively.

It is unfortunate that some feel that this effort by the Cordoba Institute to make a public showing of moderate Islam is a disservice to their lost loved ones. Emotions can be raw and uncontrolled, and there may be an association with Islam and the attacks that is difficult to overcome. However, that does not excuse politicians who have exploited this event to gain ground in political squabbling, who encouraged the popular imagination to believe that this issue is one of triumphalistic Islam imposing its dominance over the West. In retrospect it seems the decision to place the community center so close to the location of the World Trade Center attacks may have been unwise politically and in the public relations realm. There is no merit abandoning though in abandoning the religious and civil rights of others, or damaging our principles and making us a hypocrite in the world's eyes. As President Obama said, the wisdom of the project may be questionable, but I believe their cause and right are perfectly valid and ought to be defended.

It can get depressing to read news stories or articles. People who are sound, intelligent, well-educated, and well-researched can have silly and absurd thoughts. People who otherwise might be very nice and mild can be aggressively fixated on issues to an amazing degree. Reasonableness seems to have very little correlation with any other factor. And I expect that all those people are sincere, so I could very well be just as silly and absurd.

Inspiration strikes in a weird way

So I've been dating this girl for five months, shes amazing but recently I've had thoughts of leaving her. She's around too much, i don't get enough time with my friends, she gets angry very easy, shes to preoccupied with sex (I know that's weird for a guy to say that but i'm different), she doesn't have a problem with not using protection but i never would without it, i like my life with no little mikes running around thank you very much, she also doesn't like me 'having fun' without her essentially, whenever i hang out with friends or do some kind of substance without her there, and it gets her pissed. I'm not one to be told what to do my someone who's not even my family.

She is a lovely girl, funny, pretty, smart and everything, but i feel if i broke it off i might be happier. I'm not sure though, and i hate hurting people. What made me think a lot about this was i wrote the first song (lyrics/music) i've liked in a long time, and it was about this. I'm not sure how much i mean everything in the words. Forgive my punctuation and spelling, i wrote this down in a hurry.
