The principle of the idea is that all of your online services could easily be working together to make your life easier. The basis for these interactions relies on the formula "If this, then that." This basically means that you can set up one service to watch another, and if a certain trigger is fired, to do a certain action.
Ifttt allows you to make a bunch of popular services like facebook, twitter, youtube, craigslist, dropbox, google talk, rss feeds, google calendar, yahoo weather, and a bunch more, work together seamlessly.
For instance, here's some of the combinations that I have found awesome with ifttt:
-If I upload a new photo to Flickr, then download that photo to my dropbox.
-If I send a text tagged #tweet to ifttt, then post that text message to my twitter account.
-If I update my Google+ account with a public post, then post that to to my twitter.
-If I call ifttt and leave a voicemail, then email me a downloadable mp3 of the message I left, as well as a transcription of what I said.
-If a new movie is coming out soon, then post it's release date to my google calendar
-If it's going to rain tomorrow, then send me a text message.
-If an RSS feed I follow posts a new article, then save that article to my Instapaper.
These are just a few of the possibilities. There are literally thousands of possible combinations, meaning that you can automate some of the most common services on the internet. Best of all, you don't need any knowledge of APIs or coding. You just pair the services together, and tell them what to do. You should really, really check it out. I can't even believe how useful it has already been.
