See I'm in love with everyone,
Every sweetheart on the scene,
Each set of cheekbones that'll flare past me,
I'm not saying that it's right,
And I'm not saying it's a life,
I'm just saying it's where I'm at tonight.
And I could be with anyone.

Actually the book was edited by Eiji Aonuma, one of the main producers of Zelda. And the timeline is 100% consistent with the developer quotes and the games. There's a lot more details that we could go into but I'm not that much of a timeline nerd
The only games that don't exactly link to each other are the Game Boy ones (Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages/Seasons), and the classic games (A Link to the Past, Zelda 1, Zelda 2), but that's mostly because I think that Nintendo had no idea that Zelda would be really popular and with it the timeline of the games so they didn't really care how those games were places. But they managed to make it fit.

Minish Cap explained the origin of Link's hat, not the sword, but I think that was retconned (aka re-written) or something since Link has the hat in Skyward Sword.
