Today Nintendo released the Hyrule Historia, which supposedly has the timeline of all of the Zelda games. Ok it may not seem to be that big of a deal but early on in the series people have been wondering how the games fit and tie in with each other. There's been some rough translations of the book so far and here is what the translations are saying -- I'm waiting for more accurate ones to see if this one is actually legit.

This is super cool but imo that doesn't make sense kindof. Or i'm wrong.

See I'm in love with everyone,
Every sweetheart on the scene,
Each set of cheekbones that'll flare past me,
I'm not saying that it's right,
And I'm not saying it's a life,
I'm just saying it's where I'm at tonight.

And I could be with anyone.

That may be what someone at Nintendo thinks, but really it seems impossible to put together a true storyline. If you take a hard look, most of the Zelda games could go in any order. There isn't much to link one Zelda game to another.

Actually the book was edited by Eiji Aonuma, one of the main producers of Zelda. And the timeline is 100% consistent with the developer quotes and the games. There's a lot more details that we could go into but I'm not that much of a timeline nerd :P

The only games that don't exactly link to each other are the Game Boy ones (Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages/Seasons), and the classic games (A Link to the Past, Zelda 1, Zelda 2), but that's mostly because I think that Nintendo had no idea that Zelda would be really popular and with it the timeline of the games so they didn't really care how those games were places. But they managed to make it fit.

Well, if you take out those five/six games (Four Swords Adventures?), which is almost half the games, I guess I could conceive of a timeline relating the rest of the games. The obvious ones are OoT -> MM and WW -> PH -> ST. I don't remember the story of Minish cap in depth, but I thought we found out how the master sword was created in this game which would lead to MC -> OoT. Then, I though Skyward Sword also explained this, which would mean SS -> OoT. So I don't know. The other games can go almost anywhere.

Minish Cap explained the origin of Link's hat, not the sword, but I think that was retconned (aka re-written) or something since Link has the hat in Skyward Sword.
